Cloverfield: Why I Already Hate It.

I went, like many to see Transformers in its opening weekend and it was well worth the 8 bucks to see it and I was more than happy to buy it when it came out on DVD. But as many know, there was a mysterious teaser before Transformers – one that left a lot of questions in ones mind. Of course the speculation started and the movie got the codename “Cloverfield” and is apparently a monster movie of some sorts – some say Godzilla – and God I hope not.

Then there appeared to be some information seeping out here in there in the form of websites with hidden clues, this of course isn’t unusual, but it is the way that it has been gone about that really gets on my nerves. Everyone by now is more annoyed than excited about this film, now officially called “Cloverfield”… yeah… real terrifying name… But anyway, they claim that information will be released in an internet web site alternate reality game similar to that of “The Dark Knight”. The problem with this is – no one has seen any of these web sites even though they are supposedly in development. As far as anyone knows there are just three web sites actually related to the movie and they really aren’t giving away enough to keep anyone interested.

Now with the lack of promotional web sites that were promised and well lack of a good name, I am really starting to hate this film, a film I was once excited for and haven’t even seen. Because ‘The Dark Knight” has done more web game related advertising at it is a bigger name movie and really doesn’t need it, most people will see it because it is Batman! Hell, the Nine Inch Nails album “Year Zero” got a hell of an internet based alternate reality game going that even managed to manifest itself into actual events adding to the concept of the album.

Now with all of this in mind, I really hate this film – I will see it – sure. But I am no longer expecting anything awesome to come of it, now I could be wrong – it could be great but I’m starting to doubt it.

  1. Well!!! Don’t be too sure. I agree with you and that type of viral marketing just raises everyone’s guts and makes people expect so much from a movie. I’d personally diss the movie if its not worth the buzz its creating.lol

I am waiting, a second trailer is supposed to be attached to Beowulf but I didn’t see it, so maybe, just maybe they will finally release all of this press they are supposedly working on. lol
